This modern two-story residence with a basement draws inspiration from the relaxed elegance of Hawaiian coastal living, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor environments. The design emphasizes openness, light, and a strong connection to its surroundings, creating a home that feels both expansive and tranquil.

At its core, the architecture is defined by clean lines and fluid spatial transitions, allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the interiors. A thoughtfully integrated indoor-outdoor relationship extends the living spaces beyond the home’s envelope, anchored by an outdoor kitchen and entertainment area designed for both everyday living and hosting.

A standout feature of the residence is the basement level, where large windows frame views of the pool, transforming what is typically a secondary space into a light-filled, engaging environment. Complementing this is a dedicated spa, reinforcing the home’s emphasis on wellness and retreat.

The result is a refined yet relaxed contemporary home — one that captures the essence of coastal living while delivering a sophisticated, modern architectural experience.

Architect: Curt Kline / Modernhouse

Known as Five Palms, the Selby Lane Residence is set on the former site of a modest mid-century rancher once occupied by modernist furniture designer Fohlke Ohlssen. The property carries a layered architectural lineage, including a 1961 unbuilt modernist proposal by Calvin & Wong Architects, whose vision for the site resonates subtly with the home that stands today.

Five Palms was designed by architect Curt Cline as his debut residential project, conceived for a young family with a focus on indoor–outdoor living, gathering, and long-term adaptability. Completed in 2013, the house is organized as a two-wing composition, balancing shared living spaces with more private family areas while maintaining a strong sense of human scale.

In 2019, the project was expanded with the addition of the “Flying V” guesthouse and pool composition, completing the architectural ensemble.

In 2025, the residence underwent an extensive interior remodel led by Sophie Goineau Design Studio. The work included a full reconfiguration of interior spaces, the integration of custom millwork throughout, new doors, new ceiling, lighting design, and the introduction of a cohesive material palette of warm woods, terrazzo, natural stones and lime finishes. Kitchen, bathrooms, built-ins, and architectural details were redesigned and executed as part of a unified approach, aligning interior architecture with the original structure.

The result is a home where architecture, interior architecture, and landscape are experienced as a continuous and balanced whole.

Windy City Builders

Windy City Builders and Architect Davide Gianella present the diamond home, a striking residence that blends modern style and technology integration.

The house exterior features San Francisco sparkle concrete leading up to an iron beam awning and entry pivot door. Wood accents complete balconies and patios throughout the property. A unique roof supports Tesla solar tiles while blending the neighborhood aesthetic.

Inside, linear LEDs throughout the home provide a futuristic aesthetic. Modern craftsmanship feature trim less natural wood doors, flush baseboard, and hidden window shade pockets. The kitchen is modern European with panelized appliances and stainless-steel details. Bathrooms feature a stone theme with custom solid surface tops.

The flow of the house uplifts the occupant’s mood. The staircase is intentionally designed to be a focal point through bright airy feel and use of premium materials. The primary room is away from the other bedrooms with a fully custom walk in closet and spacious bath. Downstairs, the house retains glass in places of the original Mackay it replaced. Two large Fleetwood sliders create a circular orbit that joins the outdoor spaces, living, room, and kitchen for entertaining. Come take a look, note cards throughout the home give more detailed information.

This project is an entirely new construction, independently designed and built by our firm, including architecture, interior, and landscape design.

Conceived in a purely modern language, the house presents a restrained and precise architectural expression. The façade is composed through a limited palette of travertine, wood-grain aluminum, and warm white stucco, seeking a quiet sense of balance and material harmony. Particular attention was given to the control of scale, proportion, and the placement of openings along the street frontage. Aluminum screens are introduced in front of the dining room’s large glazing, while a planted buffer mediates the relationship between the entry platform and the public realm.

These elements collectively soften the building’s presence and articulate a subtle dialogue between contemporary architecture and its neighborhood context.

Internally, the spatial organization prioritizes functionality and clarity. The centrally located family room operates as a spatial hinge, simultaneously connecting and separating interior and exterior spaces, as well as public and private zones, forming the core of daily life within the house.
